Fort St John at a Glance
Swishing grain, grazing cattle and steadily pumping oil and gas derricks backdrop
the Peace Region town of Fort St. John, dubbed the “The Energetic City" due
to its wealth of natural resources. Beginning as a trading post with a total membership
of 12 people in 1794, the community moved approximately six times until rooting
in its present location 73 km (46 mi) northwest Dawson Creek, and 387 km (240
mi) southeast of Fort Nelson. The development of the Alaska
Highway contributed greatly to a steady growth of population, now at over
16,000 people and providing key services to those in the outlying areas, totalling
45,000. View over 4,000 artifacts, a trapper’s cabin and teepee at the North
Peace Museum, or enjoy the sweeter things in life at The
Honey Place, a working honey farm and site of the world’s largest glass beehive.
The late summer light allows for extended enjoyment of golfing, hiking and fishing,
while winter pleasures include snow-shoeing, dog sledding and nearby heli-skiing
opportunities.
